Right here, across the street, Skellefteå’s future travel center is planned to be built.
Construction of the railroad the North Bothnia Line is progressing slowly but surely, and once the line is complete, the travel center will serve as the link that permanently connects Skellefteå with both other cities along the Norrland coast and the rest of Sweden.
In fact, the North Bothnia Line will fundamentally change both the options available and the way of life along the Norrland coast. Travel times will be significantly reduced, and it will be possible to commute between cities in a more flexible way. This opens up new perspectives on where and how you want to work, creating greater freedom in everyday life.
The travel hub itself is designed as an open and easy-to-navigate space where transfers between modes of transport are close and seamless. Short distances, clear pathways, and good visibility make it easy to find your way, whether you arrive by bike, bus, or train.
Moreover, it sends important signals to the outside world when sustainable modes of travel are prioritized in practice. Because it’s clear that when it becomes easier to choose the train, bus, or bike, the need for a car decreases—without compromising accessibility. Quite the opposite.
When the North Bothnia Line begins service in Skellefteå, the travel center will become both a clear gateway to Skellefteå and a symbol of a city that is connected—both within itself and with the rest of Sweden.
In 2023–2024, Skellefteå Municipality, in collaboration with the Swedish Association of Architects, organized a design competition for the Skellefteå Travel Center and its immediate surroundings. The winning entry was “View of the Cloudberry Land.”
The winning proposal was developed by a team consisting of C.F. Møller Sweden, Nordmark & Nordmark, WSP, and Bjerking.
The proposal is currently being refined in collaboration between the municipality, the Swedish Transport Administration, and the team behind the winning entry.
