From transportation route to social corridor

You are now standing at the intersection of Nygatan and Stationsgatan. To the south, you can see the river, and if you look north, you can see all the way up to the old Station House.

Stationsgatan is gradually evolving from being primarily a transportation route into a social corridor where people choose to spend time. The street is part of Skellefteå’s so-called north–south corridor and serves as one of the city’s most important backbones. By connecting the future travel center in the north with the city park and the river in the south, the corridor will make it easier for people to get around both on foot and by bike.

To make this possible, spaces have been redistributed. The number of parking spaces has been reduced to make room for wider sidewalks, separated bike lanes, and more greenery. Tree-lined avenues and rain gardens enhance the experience, manage stormwater, and strengthen the city’s green infrastructure.

At the same time, great importance has been placed on both safety and sustainability in the transformation process. Because pedestrians and cyclists no longer have to jostle with cars, safety is improved, and well-designed lighting solutions help you feel safe and secure even during the darker hours of the day. Furthermore, the sustainability perspective is further reinforced by the use of electric machinery to reduce both noise and emissions, and by the reuse of materials such as natural stone.

In the future Skellefteå that is now taking shape, Stationsgatan will also play a key role by connecting the city center with Campus Skellefteå for everyone who chooses to walk or bike. This will become even more apparent once Parkbron is closed to car traffic. When all parts are fully developed, this north-south corridor will become a cohesive main axis with its own distinct character. A corridor where it is easy to get around and which allows the journey through the city to become part of the experience.

FAKTA

At the top of Stationsgatan , you’ll see Skellefteå Station, which opened in the 1910s, and the street quickly became a bustling hub for travelers, goods, and transportation. Today, the corridor has been redesigned with less car traffic and more space for walking, cycling, and greenery. The project was completed in 2025 and is designed for local residents and passersby as well as for the climate.
