If you continue across to the other side of the bridge Parkbron, you’ll see a new square taking shape: Södertorg. What once played a more low-key role in the city center is being transformed into a reborn part of the city.
Södertorg is planned for everything from small-scale retail to new housing and exciting gatherings. A place that not only connects Campus and the city center but also creates something unique. A local setting where everyday life can take place.
At the same time, the surrounding routes are changing. The street Bockholmsvägen is evolving into a clearer and greener connection between Campus and Södertorg. What was previously mainly a road is gaining a clearer sense of being an urban space. And with more greenery and better conditions for walking and cycling, it becomes easier to get around at your own pace.
What is happening here is part of something bigger. As more routes are strengthened and new meeting places emerge, the balance of the city shifts. More places come to life. And more directions become possible. Skellefteå is transitioning from being a city with a distinct downtown to a city where life unfolds on multiple sides of the river.
Now you’ve heard the story of a place that refused to get stuck in the car-centric planning of the 1960s, and instead decided to build for people. Of a municipality that saw its winters and summers not as obstacles but as opportunities. That understands that the best city is the one you create together.
And if you take a walk through downtown Skellefteå today and feel the breeze from the river, hear a conversation in the square, or see a child biking across the bridge—then you can see the traces of that work.
Not because it was easy. But because it was the right thing to do.
Thank you for choosing to join us on our journey of change!
Parkbron has long been an important link between the northern and southern parts of the city. Today, the bridge is primarily used for car traffic, but in the long term , it will be developed into an attractive and safepedestrian and bicycle bridge. The goal is to connect Bockholmsvägen in the south with Stationsgatan in the north and create better connections along the river.
