A city center where people want to be

You are now standing in the middle of Nygatan. Nygatan is one of the clearest examples of how Skellefteå’s city center is developing into a place where people want to be.

Here, an attractive, functional, and well-designed shopping street is taking shape, where it feels natural to get around on foot. Nygatan’s role as both an experience and shopping street is deliberately enhanced by active facades that bring life and movement to the area. Especially where it meets Guldtorget further ahead, previously closed-off corners are being transformed into open, socially inviting public spaces.

One detail that truly characterizes Nygatan is the human scale. When environments are adapted to human size, something quite interesting happens: they come to life. That is why great emphasis is placed on the ground floors, where shops, cafés, and restaurants open up toward the street and create direct contact between inside and outside, while residential units and other businesses are given the opportunity to occupy higher floors in the buildings.

With many smaller units and a wide variety of styles, a rhythm is created along the street that stimulates both movement and curiosity. Details, light, and transparency make us want to pause, look in, and move on. Furthermore, the boundary between outside and inside is blurred in an interesting way. Shopping centers open up with more entrances, and active facades make room for welcoming spaces where people can meet—perhaps by chance—sit down and become part of city life.

Together, all of this contributes to a street that is more than just a function. Nygatan is a place that feels alive and allows human city life to take shape in everyday life.

FAKTA

In the early1900s,Nygatan was an important part of everyday life in Skellefteå. People moved about here on foot, by bicycle, and in horse-drawn carriages.

The street also housed important community functions. In the early 1900s, the city’s fire station was located here, among other things. It featured a tall tower where fire hoses were hung up to dry. This made Nygatan a place where both the city’s activity and safety took shape.
